Abstract
474,943. Movable floors for loading vehicles. BROMILOW & EDWARDS, Ltd., and SWIFT, H. W. Dec. 15, 1936, No. 34411. [Class 78 (iv)] In movable floors for vehicles comprising a band of flexible material secured at its ends to drums or rollers and provided with front and rear manually-operated gearboxes, each effective to drive the band in one direction, a power-driven gear-box is fitted which is complementary to the manually-operated gear-boxes and selectively connectable to either of them to drive the band. In the construction shown the band and manuallyoperated gear-boxes are as described in Specification 376,425, and the power gear comprises a divided shaft 12, carrying bevel wheels 23, 24 constantly in mesh with a bevel wheel 22 on a driving- shaft 21 connected by belt gear to a counter-shaft operated from the engine gear-box. The halves of the shaft carry hand-operated sliding clutches 26 31 alternatively engaged at will either to drive the gear-box 8 to move the floor forwardly or to drive the gear-box 9 through the sprocket gear 34 and shaft 13 to move it rearwardly. A sliding horizontal shaft, carrying upwardly-extending clutchengaging forks, is moved by linkage 42, 43, on the driver's cab to position the clutches as desired ; a spring normally maintaining this linkage with both clutches disengaged. The diminishing diameter of the rolled-up portion of the floor on its end rollers as it winds off, may cause (1) a spring-pressed lever 62, Fig. 3, to actuate an indicator 61 or (2) may cause a. similar lever 67 to move the linkage 43 to disengage the clutches when the belt is fully unwound. When both clutches are disengaged, the floor can be operated manually on applying a crank handle to the squared ends of the shafts 12. One of these latter shafts can also be uncoupled from the gear-box 8 and used as a power take-off device for performing other operations. Specification 383,463 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
