Abstract
A four wheel drive tractor has a power take-off output shaft (30) and a gear train (33, 34, 35, 36) for driving the P.T.O output shaft at two or more speeds for a given input speed. First (44) and second (50) power take-off gear train input shafts are provided, the first input shaft (44) being directly driveable from an engine at a speed directly proportional to engine speed, and the second input shaft (50) being driveable from an output stage of a transmission at a speed proportional to the speed of the vehicle over the ground. The second input shaft (50) may be driven from and coaxial with a shaft (23) which provides drive to the front wheels of the vehicle, shaft (23) being driven from the output stage of the transmission via a drive take-off (24, 25). The arrangement enables the P.T.O. output shaft (30) to be driven at two or more speeds proportional to engine speed and two or more speeds proportional to the speed of the vehicle over the ground by the appropriate setting of the gear train (33, 34, 35, 36). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Power take-off arrangements
This invention relates to power take-off (P.T.O.) drive arrangements for vehicles such as agricultural/industrial tractors.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved from of P.T.O. drive arrangement.
According to the present invention a vehicle
P.T.O. drive arrangement comprises a P.T.O.
output shaft, a gear train for driving the output shaft at two or more speeds for a given input speed, and first and second P.T.O. gear train input shafts driveable at speeds directly proportional to engine speed and ground speed of the vehicle respectively so that the output shaft can be driven at two or more speeds directly proportional to a given engine speed and ground speed respectively.
The invention also provides a vehicle having an engine which drives ground engaging members (e.g., wheels) via a transmission to propel the vehicle over the ground, the vehicle also including a P.T.O. output shaft, a gear train for driving the output shaft at two or more speeds for a given input speed, and first and second P.T.O. gear train input shafts, the first input shaft being directly driveable from the engine at a speed directly proportional to engine speed, and the second input shaft being driveable from an output stage of the transmission at a speed proportional to the speed of the vehicle over the ground.
Thus the P.T.O. output shaft can be driven at two or more speeds proportional to engine speed and two or more speeds proportional to the speed of the vehicle over the ground by appropriate setting of the gear train.
In a particular form of the present invention (applied for example to a four-wheel drive tractor), the output stage of the transmission includes a drive shaft for driving the rear wheels and a drive take-off from the drive shaft for driving the front wheels, the second
P.T.O. gear train input shaft being driven from the drive take-off at a lower level than the drive shaft.
Preferably the front wheels are driven via a front wheel drive shaft which is powered from the drive take-off and the second P.T.O. gear train input shaft is co-axial with the front wheel drive shaft and is driven therefrom.
In a preferred arrangement in a vehicle such as a tractor hav'ing a transversely extending back axle, the gear train is located to the rear of the transversely extending centre line of the back axle with the first input shaft extending longitudinally of the tractor above the back axle centre line and the second input shaft extending parallel to the first input shaft below the back axle centre line.
Preferably first and second clutches are provided for disconnecting drive from the first and second input shafts respectively.
Conveniently the second P.T.O. gear train input shaft is driven from the front wheel drive shaft via the second clutch (which may be a slidable clutch sleeve).
One embodiment of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is partially cut-away schematic view of an agricultural tractor embodying the present invention;
Figure 2 shows the P.T.O. drive arrangement of Fig. 1 on a larger scale, and
Figure 3 shows an alternative P.T.O. output shaft arrangement for use with the present invention.
Figure 1 shows a schematic view of a tractor 10 having an engine 11 which drives a multi-ratio transmission contained in casing 12 via a clutch contained in housing 1 3. An output shaft 1 4 of the transmission drives a crown wheel and pinion assembly 1 5 which is contained in back axle housing 1 6 and which drives the rear wheels 1 7 of the tractor.
As is conventional, a front axle support 1 8 is secured to the front of the engine 11 and pivotally supports a front axle centre-differential 1 9 which drives the front wheels 20 of the tractor. Drive is transmitted to the front wheel differential 19 via a shaft 21 which is coupled via a sleeve 22 with a front wheel drive shaft 23. Shaft 23 is driven from the output shaft 14 of transmission 1 2 via meshing gears 24 and 25. Gear 25 is clutched to shaft 23 by a clutch assembly 26 to provide a drive connection to the front wheel when four wheel drive is required. The clutch assembly 26 may taken any suitable form and will not be described further since it forms no part of the present invention.
A parking brake assembly 27 is provided whose rotatable braking elements are coupled with portion 1 4a of the transmission output shaft and whose stationary elements are held fixed on portion 1 6a of the back axle casing.
Any suitable form of parking brake may be used. For example, UK patent application 2026634 discloses a suitable form of brake which is cam operated using a rotatable shaft 29 and actuating lever 28 which is rotated as indicated by arrow X to apply and release the brake.
The P.T.O. drive arrangement of the tractor comprises a P.T.O. output shaft 30 which is supported in the rear of the back axle housing 16 by bearings 31 and 32. The P.T.O. output shaft is driveable by two-speed gear train constituted by gear wheels 33 and 34 which are rotatably mounted on the inner end of the output shaft 30, and by meshing gears 35 and 36 which are integrally formed by a shaft 37 supported by bearings 38 and 39. The gear train, which is located to the rear of the centre line C of the back axle 16, is com pleted by an axially slideable coupler 40 which can be slide to the left from a central disengaged position shown in Fig. 2 to couple gear 33 with shaft 30 or to the right to couple gear 34 with shaft 30.This above coupling is achieved by arranging the sleeve 40 to simultaneously engage teeth 41 provided on shaft 30 and either teeth 42 or 43 associated with gears 33 and 34 respectively.
The above described two speed gear train is driveable by two input shafts. The first input shaft 44 is splined at 45 into the hollow inner end of shaft 37 and is connectable via a first clutch 46 with a shaft 47 which is driven at all times at engine flywheel speed. Thus, if the two speed gear train is driven from the first input shaft 44 (by engaging clutch '46) the P.T.O. output shaft 30 can be selectively driven at one of two speeds (dependent on the position of sleeve 40) which are directly proportional to engine speed. The first lower speed is provided via gears 33 and 35 and the second higher speed via gears 34 and 36.
The second P.T.O. gear train input shaft 50 carries on its rear end a gear 51 which meshes with gear 33. The forward end of shaft 50 can be clutched using slidable coupling sleeve 52 with the rearward end of front wheel drive shaft 23. Thus if clutch assembly 26 is engaged so that shaft 23 is rotating, shaft 50 can be driven at the same speed as shaft 23 with the sleeve 52 displaced to the left into the position shown in Fig. 2. When the two speed gear train is powered using input shaft 50 via clutch sleeve 52, two
P.T.O. shafts speeds can be obtained (dependent on the position of sleeve 40) which are proportional to the actual speed of the tractor over the ground. The first speed is provided via gears 33 and 51 and the second speed is provided via gears 51, 33, 35 36 and 34.
Fig. 3 shows an alternative P.T.O. output shaft arrangement in which the single shaft 30 and axially slideable coupler 40 are replaced by two alternatively usable P.T.O. output shafts 60 and 61 respectively (only half of each of these shafts being shown in Fig. 3).
Gears 33 and 34 are also modified and are provided with internal splined portions 33a and 34a respectively.
As can be seen from Fig. 3, shaft 60 is provided with a splined portion 60a which is engageable with splines 33a on gear wheel 33. Similarly shaft 61 is provided with a splined portion 61a which is engageable with splines 34a of gear wheel 34.
Thus when P.T.O. shaft 60 is inserted and held in place by circlip 62 drive to the output shaft 60 is via gear 33 only (since the splines portion 34a of gear wheel 34 is not engaged).
Similarly when P.T.O. output shaft 61 is inserted, drive to shaft 61 is via gear wheel 34 only (since the splioned portion 33a of gear wheel 33 is not engaged).
Thus the two shaft arrangement of Fig. 3 provides an alternative means of selectively driving the P.T.O. output shaft from either gear 33 or 34. The remainder of the P.T.O.
drive arrangement is identical to that shown in
Figs. 1 and 2 as described above.
As will be appreciated, the present invention thus provides a P.T.O. drive arrangement in which the P.T.O. output shaft can be driven at two speeds directly proportional to the engine speed of the tractor (by engaging clutch 46 and appropriately positioning of sleeve 40) or two speeds proportional to the speed of the tractor over the ground (by engaging clutch sleeve 52 and appropriately positioning sleeve 40).
As has been stated previously, clutches 46 and 52 can be of any suitable form and can be operated in any suitable manner (e.g., mechnically electrically or hydraulically).
Clearly an interlock system must be provided to prevent simultaneous engagement of clutches 46 and 52.
The manner in which the drive for shaft 50 is taken in a co-axial manner from the front wheel drive shaft 23 is seen as a significant feature of the present invention enabling a two speed ground-speed P.T.O. drive to be achieved in a simple manner.
