539,253. Motor vehicle driving gear. BLAGDEN, W. M., BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., and PERKINS, H. May 13, 1940, No. 8551. Addition to 523,657. [Class 79 (ii)] In a motor vehicle having all four wheels driven through a normal change-speed and reverse gear-box and a central gear-box comprising a reverse and a differential gear from which the drive is distributed through longitudinal propeller shafts to the wheels on either side of the vehicle, as described in the parent Specification two additional lockable differential gears are provided, one between the front and rear wheels on each side of the vehicle. In the construction shown the usual engine and gearbox drive the central gear unit 1 comprising a reverse and a main differential gear 3 arranged longitudinally of the vehicle. The main differential shafts drive the additional differential gears 13 through chain or spur gears 4, 5, 6 and the shafts 7, 7a of these latter differentials drive the front and rear road wheels on the corresponding side of the vehicle through couplings 9 and longitudinal propeller shafts 10. The differentials 13 can be locked by means of sliding clutches 16 operated by the driver by means of a single hand-lever and linkage, a telescopic spring link, Fig. 5 (not shown), being inserted in the linkage to each clutch so that the hand lever can always be moved to the desired position and the clutches will engage or disengage as soon as the clutch teeth are in the correct relative positions or as soon as the load thereon is diminished. The clutches 16 are adapated to lock the differential shafts 7a to the differential casings 14 by means of clutch teeth 17, 18.
