Abstract

617,972. Driving auxiliary apparatus. WILLYS-OVERLAND MOTORS, Inc. Jan. 29, 1946, No. 2818. Convention date, March 10, 1945. [Class 79 (ii)] A removable power takeoff unit for a vehicle comprises a casing having two cover - plates, a pair of parallel shafts being mounted in anti-friction bearings in the coverplates, power being supplied to the splined projecting end of one of said shafts, transmitted by two enmeshing gears within the casing, and taken from the splined projecting end of the other shaft. As shown in Fig. 2, drive from the engine 31 is taken through the gear-box 32 (the changespeed control of which is mounted on the steering column), to the transfer case 33 having a lever 29 for engaging the front wheel drive and a lever 30 for engaging an extra low gear. A shaft 45, Fig. 3, projects from the gear-box into the transfer case, and terminates in a series of clutch teeth 50, arranged opposite similar clutch teeth 49 on a shaft 48, the two sets of clutch teeth being engageable by a sliding collar 54 actuated by lever 59, whereby power is transmitted to the shaft 48, universal joint 68 and shaft 70. The rear end of shaft 70, Fig. 2, drives through a universal joint 86 the power take-off unit 73, bolted to the frame cross-member 16 reinforced by bracing members 17, 18. The unit 73 comprises a shaft 82, Fig. 4, on which is splined a gear 107 which drives a gear 109 of slightly different size splined on the shaft 95, whose other end 101 is also splined. By unbolting the end plate 78, the gears 107, 109 may be interchanged to alter the gear ratio. Splined on to the shaft 101 is a sleeve 114 fast with a bevel gear 115 which drives bevel gear 124 and pulley 134. The housing 111 together with the sleeve 114, bevel gears and pulley may be unbolted and withdrawn from the shaft 101 leaving the latter exposed for connection to any other mechanism, or it may be covered with a protective casing.
