Abstract
582,356. Motor fore-carriages. RUBERY, OWEN, & CO., Ltd., and JORDAN, R. July 19, 1944, No. 13787. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] A works' truck or the like in which the power unit is carried by a turntable supported by one or two driven road wheels, is provided with a change-speed mechanism having a driving shaft which can be disconnected from the driven shaft and is so positioned that it can be turned by a crank handle from either end. The power unit 11 drives through shaft 12, clutch 27 and reducing chain drive 14, the driving shaft 16 on which are freely mounted gears 17, 18, 19 in constant mesh with complementary gears 20, 21, 22 fast on the shaft 23 which shaft drives the road wheels 26 through bevel pinion 24 and bevel gear 25 of the differential. The freely mounted gears 17, 18, 19 may be selectively clutched to the shaft 16 by dog clutches in known manner. The shaft 16 may be engaged at either end by appropriately handed dog clutches 32, 33 on spring loaded shafts mounted in housings 36, 37 and engageable at portions 34, 35 by a crank handle, whereby the engine may be cranked whatever the position of the turntable relative to the platform portion of the truck. A chain 29 may drive an engine cooling fan 28, and the chain drive 14 may be replaced by a vertical shaft with bevel gears at either end. Specification 581,502, [Group XXXII], is referred to.
