492,245. Controlling change-speed gearing on motor vehicles ; hinges. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 25, 1938, No. 5984. Convention date, March 3, 1937. [Class 79 (v)] [Also in Groups XXIV and XXV] The change-speed gear lever 1 of a motor vehicle forms one side of an upstanding parallel linkage, a parallel rod 3 resiliently mounted on a transverse axis 18 forms another side, and an inverted channel bar 2 having a hand lever extension is pivotally connected to the upper ends of lever 1 and rod 3. The arrangement provides a clear floor space in the driving compartment, and a minimum of change in elevation of the hand lever when effecting gear changes. Gear lever 1 is supported by a universal mounting 13 in a hollow boss 12 on the gear box 10, and operates a locking plate 39 and shifter bar 40 by means of ball joints 34 and 33. Universal mounting 13 comprises a longitudinal pivot-pin 32 for the gear lever carried by a shell 21 which is pivotally supported in the boss 12 for rotation about a transverse axis by means of spring-pressed caps 22 seating in lateral apertures in the shell and boss.
