Abstract

464,472. Motor vehicles; driving and steering gear. AUTO UNION AKT.-GES. Oct. 15, 1935, No. 28514. Convention date, Oct. 15, 1934. [Classes 79 (ii), 79 (iii), and 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXXII] A motor vehicle, particularly for use across country, has a rear engine and all four wheels are driven through transverse cardan shafts, are steered by means of divided track rods, and are independently sprung by transverse swinging link quadrilaterals. In the construction shown the engine g and change-speed gear n are arranged on either side of the rear axle, but form a single block carrying the radiator k. The front wheels c<1> and rear wheels c<3> are driven from the change-speed gear through a main differential gear i<1>, shafts l<1>, l<2> differential gears i<1>, i<3>, and transverse shafts m<1> having universal joints m. The main differential gear is of the self-locking type, and the other differential gears may also be of this type. The wheels are mounted on members c<a> connected to the frame longitudinals a<1> by upper and lower links d<1>, d<2> pivoted to the frame at e<3>, e<4> and to the wheel members at el, e<2>. The upper links are shorter than the lower links to reduce variations in the wheel track. Unguided springs f<1>, f<2> are provided between the lower links d2 and brackets n<a> on the frame. The wheels are steered by means of divided track rods t<1>, t<2>, Fig. 6, connected to levers s<2>, s<3> pivoted at r on the frame and coupled together by means of links q<2>, q3 and arms u<1>, u<2> on a transverse shaft v. The lever s<2> is operated by the steering gear o through a rod q<1>. In order that the rear wheels may be prevented from steering movements when desired the arm u<2> connected to the rear wheels, is loose on the shaft v and carries clutch teeth w<2>, w<3> whereby it may be slid bv the driver so as to be clutched either to the shaft as shown in Fig. 7, for four-wheel steering, or to a frame member y to hold the rear wheels in the straight position.
