Abstract
522,900. Motor vehicles. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. Dec. 20, 1938, No. 37024. Convention date, July 30. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] The engine 1 is situated above an axle gearing 3 and the engine and axle gearing are mounted on the frame 5 independently of each other. In the construction shown the engine is mounted at four points by elastic means 4 at the front end and 6 at the rear end, so that the engine can swing about a desired axis, e.g., a longitudinal axis passing through or near its C.G. The axle gear 3 is independently mounted at three points 8 on transverse frame members 9, 10 by means of rubber blocks as described in Specification 376,157. Although also elastically mounted the axle gear cannot swing freely like the engine. The front wheels may be mounted on swinging half-axles or on suspension links as shown in Fig. 3, and are driven from the engine through change-speed gear 11, a transfer gear 12, and jointed shafts 13, 17. The rear wheels may be driven through a shaft 14, and a differential gear may be provided between the shafts 13, 14. The engine may be over the front or the rear axle, and in order to minimise height is formed with a recess 15 between bearings to receive the upper part 16 of the axle gear. The change-speed gear may be combined with the axle gear.
