Abstract

362,636. Motor vehicles. NORTH, O D., 76, Elm Park Mansions, Park Walk, Chelsea. Nov. 15, 1930, No. 34458. [Classes 79 (ii), 79 (iii), and 79 (iv).] A power unit and transmission system of the type comprising a rear longitudinally-arranged engine 1 situated close to the middle of a driving shaft 4 having its ends directed towards the sides of the vehicle and driving rear road wheels 2, is characterized in that the driving shaft 4 is in advance of the wheel axles 7, these axles being articulated to the shaft 4 by a pair of rearwardly-directed arms or casings 8, and the engine shaft being arranged in the rear of the driving shaft in the space between the arms 8. In a modification the relative positions of the parts may be reversed so that the engine and driving wheels are in advance of the driving shaft. The shaft 4 is in two parts which may extend transversely as shown and drive the wheels through gearing enclosed in the casings 8, or they may be inclined and coupled directly to the wheel axles through bevel or other gearing. In the construction . shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the arms 8 and stays 9 are pivoted on an axle-like casing 3 enclosing the shaft 4. The engine drives the shaft 4 through a clutch 18, forwardly-extending shaft 10, change-speed gearing enclosed in a gear box 6, reducing gearing 14, 15, and differential gearing. Thus the engine and gear-box are on opposite sides of the shaft 4. In a modification the engine and gear-box are both at the rear of the shaft 4. The casing 3 may be dispensed with, the shaft parts 4 being universally-jointed, and the rear ends of the casings 8 being connected to the engine or chassis by pivoted stays.
