Abstract

1,037,040. Motor vehicles. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. Jan. 14, 1965 [Jan. 17, 1964], No. 1697/65. Headings B7D and B7H. Each rear wheel 5 of a rear-engined vehicle is driven from differential gearing 3 arranged between the engine 1 and a change-speed gearbox 2 by a drive shaft 16 disposed ahead of the wheel axis A and coupled to the wheel through spur gearing 11, 13 or by chain or belt gearing. The drive shaft 16 is connected by a flexible coupling 15 to the differential output shaft 4 and by a universal joint 14 to the gearing 11, 13, and may be inclined in a horizontal plane (Fig. 2, not shown). A casing 7 enclosing the gearing 11, 13 is mounted on or integral with a suspension arm 6 which swings about an axis L extending obliquely of the vehicle to intersect the centre line M on or, as shown, ahead of the differential output shafts 4. In another embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), each drive shaft is journalled in a tubular extension of the easing and is connected to the differential output shaft by a universal joint disposed on the pivot axis of the suspension arm.
