453,062. Motor road vehicles. LEYLAND MOTORS, Ltd., Richmond Road, Kingstonon-Thames, and KIRKB:AM, H., Motor Works, Hough Lane, Leyland, Lancashire. March 25, 1935, No. 9282. [Classes 79 (iii) and 79 (iv)] In a motor vehicle having the usual form of chassis frame with longitudinals between and immediately adjacent to the rear wheels, the power unit, which may be an internal. combustion engine or an electric motor, is arranged longitudinally behind one of the rear wheels on the outer side of the frame longitudinal. Two motors may be employed, one behind each rear wheel. The frame longitudinal 1 is inset at the rear end 2, the cross frame members 4 being extended to carry the engine 5. The drive is transmitted through a variable speed gear or hydraulic torque converter 7, which may be arranged in tandem with the engine or at the side as shown, and thence through a propeller shaft 8 to a differential 6. The frame member 2 may dip beneath or pass above the casing connection which is supported thereby. The frame is stiffened by bracing members 11, and the longitudinal at the opposite side may be dropped over the rear axle to provide an entrance 12. Where this is not required an engine or motor may be arranged behind each rear wheel.
