380,670. Motor vehicles. RACKHAM, G. J., 222, Sheen Road, and STUBINGS, A. J., 45, Queen's Road, both in Richmond, Surrey, and ASSOCIATED EQUIPMENT CO., Ltd., Windmill Lane, Southall, Middlesex. Dec. 18, 1931, No. 35070. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii).] Comprises a motor vehicle in which the propelling unit is arranged out of the longitudinal centre line of the vehicle and drives an axle through worm gearing in which the axis of the worm is not at right-angles to the axle and is directed towards the propelling unit. In the construction shown, the engine 14 is mounted outside the frame longitudinals 13 and drives the axle 11 through a gear-box 16, universally-jointed shafts 27, 15 and worm gear contained in a casing 17, the engine and worm shafts being directed towards each other. The shaft 15 may pass through an aperture in the frame member 13. Modifications are described in which (1) the engine shaft is parallel to the centre line of the vehicle and (2) the frame members 13 are parallel instead of being narrower at the front, as shown ; in the latter case the shaft 15 does not cross the frame members. The engine may be at one side of the longitudinal centre line of the vehicle and the worm gear at the other side. More than one axle may be driven. Specifications 380,536 and 380,537 are referred to.
