[Class 79 (ii)] In a vehicle having the engine 8 on one side of swinging halfaxles 1, 2, and the change - speed gear 7 on the other side, the shaft 9 connecting the engine and change - speed gear is located laterally of the axle driving- gear 3.. 6 so as to allow this shaft to be placed nearer the level of the axles. The shaft 9 may be situated in either of the positions I... IV, Fig. 1. The change - speed gear drives the axles through differential gear 10. The engine shaft may be coaxial with the shaft 9, as shown, or may be mounted symmetrically of the vehicle, in the latter case driving the shaft 9 through gearing.
