Abstract

663,212. Turning gear. GWILLIAM, V. C. E. MARTEN-. Jan. 5, 1950 [Jan. 7, 1949], No. 541/49. Classes 7(ii) and 7(v) [Also in Group XXXI] A vehicular power unit, comprising an internal combustion engine integral with a clutch housing and gear box; is shown in transverse section in Fig. 5 and longitudinal section in Fig. 6. It comprises a pair of proprietory two - stroke motor-cycle engines, each with flywheel. magneto ignition, secured to the opposite ends of a gear box, their crankshafts being coupled together by a transverse shaft 7. Drive is taken from the right hand end of shaft 7 through a torsional vibration damper, the inner member 8 of which is splined to the shaft 7, and the outer member 10 of which is formed with the sun pinion 9 of an epicyclic reduction gear. The planet carrier is formed as an oiltight drum 31 into -which oil is pumped from and returned to the main gear box by spiral grooves in the bearings, the epicyclic gear and the vibration damper being located in a compartment separated from the gear box by wall 33. The drum 31 is encircled by a brake band 41 carried by shoes 35 which are normally passed into engagement with the drum 31 by springs 37, but which can be separated to interrupt the drive by cam 39 actuated by lever 40 connected to the clutch pedal. Drive is taken from a second sun pinion 11 to the pinion 12 which drives the layshaft 21 and to the top gear dog clutch 13. A sleeve 14 is rotatably mounted on shaft 7 and is also supported by self-aligning ball bearings 15. Slidably mounted on sleeve 14 is reverse and first speed gearwheel 17, shown in its neutral position; when moved to the right it engages reverse idler pinion 19 and one-way clutch teeth on its righthand face engage the output sprocket 16; when moved to the left it engages first speed layshaft pinion 20 and one-way clutch teeth engage the shoulder 18 integral with the sleeve 14 which transmits the drive to output sprocket 16. 'Second and third gear ratios are achieved by sliding dog-clutch 26, which is splined to sleeve 14. to the left to engage constant mesh gears 23, 22, or to the right to engage constant mesh gears 25, 24, respectively. The double chain sprocket 16 which transmits the drive to the live axle may have a free-wheel incorporated therein. The engine is turned for starting either by a dynamotor 49 whose armature carries a pinion 48 in constant mesh with teeth on the periphery of the torsional vibration damper 10, or by a manually operated lever 54 fast with chain sprocket 52 which turns chain sprocket 51 mounted by a freewheel device on the layshaft 21. Thus when the engine is manu.. ally turned, the movement is geared up by gears 30 and 12. and by the .epicyclic gearing in casing 31.
