1465531 Engine turning gear DUCELLIER ET CIE 8 May 1974 [24 May 1973] 20186/74 Heading F1K A starting mechanism for motor vehicle I.C. engines comprises a sleeve 5b driving a pinion 5a via a one-way clutch 5c and mounted on an armature shaft 2 by helical grooves so that on rotation of the shaft by an electric starter motor an electromagnetic coupling 14 between the casing 1 and a disc 7 fast with the sleeve 5b holds the sleeve against rotation while allowing it to move axially against a return spring 10 to bring the pinion 5a into mesh with a toothed ring 15 of the engine. If the teeth on pinion 5a and ring 15 baulk before meshing, coupling 14 slips to allow rotation of pinion 5a until it meshes ring 15.
