Abstract

The engine starter drive mechanism comprises a motor (1) with drive shaft (12), a slidable shaft (37) with starter pinion (53) extending from the housing (6), a releasable coupling (33, 36) connecting pinion shaft to drive shaft, and a solenoid-operated push rod (64). The coupling is a gear tooth coupling whose driven element (36) is fixed on the shaft (37) whils its driving element (33) engages a long-pitch screw (31, 32) of a drive head (26) slidably arranged on the drive shaft (12). Damping means (39, 40, 41) are provided with a return spring (47) and there is a cut-in spring (61) between the driving element (33) and the drive head (26, 62) engaged by the push rod (64).
