Abstract

In an inertia starter a gear arrangement for transmitting drive between the starter flywheel 1 and the crank-shaft of an engine comprises rotary input and output members 13 constrained to limited angular movement and connected together by a coupling member arranged to rotate about a moving axis, the coupling member comprising a differential mechanism 11, one element 12 of which is connected to the members 13 to reset the latter during an initial phase of the operation of the starter. As shown, the flywheel 1 is connected by step-up gears 2 with a crown- and-pinion 3 driven by a differential 5 actuated by a handle 7 and driving the differential 11 through worm and worm wheel 9, 10. The starter pinion 16 is driven into engagement with an engine flywheel 17 by a screwed shaft 15 driven by the differential 11. Due to the inertia of flywheel 1 the elements 4 of the differential 5 are initially fixed and the drive passes to the element 8 acting as a step-up gear. A cam 18 constrained to turn with members 13 moves a clutch 21, splined on element 8, to lock elements 6, 8 together when members 13 are reset so that the handle 7 turns the flywheel 1 by way of crown- and-pinion 3. The flywheel 1 is then coupled through gears 2 by a clutch 22 to the members 13 to start the engine. Specification 868,706 also is referred to.
