Abstract

780,062. Turning gear. INSTART DIESEL COMPONENTS, Ltd. Feb. 16, 1954 [Dec. 12, 1952; April 1, 1953], Nos. 31574/52 and 9022/53. Class 7(5) [Also in Group XXIV] In an inertia starter comprising a flywheel 4, Fig. 1, a drive for revolving the flywheel, a gear mechanism, (see also Group XXIV) the input and output members 8 and 10 of which are geared together by a coupling member, such as an L-shaped rack or two eccentrically linked arms, arranged to rotate about a moving axis and constrained to move between an initial and a final configuration with a concomitant progressive change in gear ratio from a value exceeding unity to a value less than unity as a result of movement of the coupling member, a clutch 5, 6 is provided between the flywheel 4 and input member 8. The operating handle 1 is connected to the flywheel 4 through a step-up gearing 2, 3 whilst the spur gear 2 is connected to the engine flywheel 14 by non-reversible claw clutches 5, 6 and 12, 13, the shaft 8, gear mechanism 9 and an output gear shaft 10. The clutches are conjointly actuated by a handle 16 via levers 17 and 18 and spiral springs 21, 22 or gravity means not shown, serve to reset the gear mechanism 9 after each starting operation. In a modification, a step-up gearing 23, 24, Fig. 2, is provided between shaft 10 and a pinion 25 which is movable axially by a lever 18 into mesh with the engine flywheel teeth 26. The clutch members 12, 13 are spring-loaded into engagement and form a ratchet clutch. The change in gear ratio takes place after the starter flywheel has been brought up to speed and clutched to the input gear shaft whereupon the gears or equivalent rotate from an initial to a final position during which the gear ratio falls generally to the inverse of the initial value; the gear position may be defined by a stop or lock. In a further modification, the starter flywheel 4, Fig. 5, is formed with a pulley 35 and connected by a torque limiting device 36 to a clutch member 5 that is slidable by means, not shown, into engagement with a co-operating clutch member 6 on the input gear shaft 8 that is connected by the gear mechanism 9 to the input shaft 10. The latter has a ratchet clutch 12, 13 mounted thereon, as in Fig. 2, whilst the starter pinion 25 is screwthreaded on to the shaft 10. The pulley 35 is connected by a belt, not shown, to a further pulley 'on a winding handle. The gear mechanism 9 comprises a pinion 30, on each of the shafts 8 and 10 that engage one of two racks 31 each formed in the arms of an L-shaped element.
