Class 7 (v) In an inertia starter comprising a flywheel 7 adapted to be rotated and then coupled to the crankshaft of an engine, means, such as weighted levers 8, for decoupling the flywheel 7 from the crankshaft when the engine has started, drive means, for example handle 17, a main drive connection such as shaft 18 and gears 12, 13, between the handle 17 and flywheel 7, an axially movable pinion 2 adapted to engage the engine and clutch means between the pinion 2 and flywheel 7, there is provided an auxiliary drive connection, for example shaft 18 and gears 5, 16, between the handle 17 and pinion 2 in parallel with the main drive connection and clutch, which is adapted to move the pinion into mesh with the engine before the clutch is engaged. Rotation of handle 17 is transmitted through bevel gears 19, shaft 18, ratchet 14 and step-down spur gearing 16, 5 to a threaded starting shaft 3 and so causes translation of pinion 2 into mesh with the engine flywheel 1 which is thereby slowly cranked. The pinion is prevented from turning during its meshing movement by means of a light spring 15. Rotation of shaft 18 is also transmitted by means of a further ratchet 21 and step-up spur gearing 13, 12, to the starter flywheel 7, which is axially slidable upon a shaft 11; when the flywheel 7 attains a given speed the. weighted levers 8 overcome a spring 9 and move outwardly under centrifugal action thereby clutching the flywheel to a member 6 on the starter shaft 3 and rotating the engine at high speed in the same direction as the slowspeed auxiliary drive. By disengaging ratchet 21 the handle 17 may be used to effect turning of the engine for adjustment or other purposes. Instead of having a common shaft 18 between the main and auxiliary drives, the latter may take the form of a belt drive, handle 17 being disconnectible from the bevel gears 19 by transposing ratchet 21 to a position between the handle and bevel gears, the ratchet becoming inoperative upon pulling the handle.
