Abstract

721,545. Engine assisted cycles. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd. March 2, 1953 [Nov. 29, 1951], No. 27976/51. Classes 79(2) and 79(3). A power transmission device for fitting to a pedal cycle to provide an auxiliary driving means therefor, comprises an internal combustion engine 1, a clutch 4, 5, a gear train and a sleeve-like member 11 surrounding the hub 9 of a cycle wheel and having teeth intermeshing with teeth on the hub and with an annular member 8 rotatably mounted on the hub and constituting part of the gear train, the member 11 being urged by resilient means into en-' gagement with the gear train in such a manner that it may be readily disengaged therefrom when the rotational speed of the wheel is in excess of that provided by the gear train. The engine 1 drives a crankshaft 2 to which is secured a pinion 3 meshing with one part 4 of the clutch, the other axially movable part 5 of which meshes with teeth 8a formed on the annular gear member 8. A remotely actuated sliding member 7 facilitates disengagement of the clutch. The sleeve-like member 11 has internal teeth 11a slidably engaging with teeth on the hub. A spring 12 mounted between a stop 13 on the hub and a shoulder on the member 11 urges the member 11 towards the gear 8 so that teeth in the shoulder engage with teeth 10 on the gear 8. If the clutch is engaged when the wheel is rotating at a higher speed than would be obtained when engine driven e.g. when the cycle is coasting down a hill, the member 11 will be urged out of engagement with the gear 8 against the action of the spring 12.
