Abstract

210,739. Eclipse Machine Co., (Assignees of Whitney, M. P.). Feb. 3, 1923, [Convention date]. Turning-gear.-In an engine starter of the Bendix type, the driving member is disengaged from the engine fly-wheel, if the latter turns backwards, by means of two rotary elements which are separate from the transmission gear and come into co-operation with the fly-wheel and the driving member respectively. As shown, the driving member comprises a pinion 5 having a flange 13 in contact with a control member or nut 12, which is mounted on a screwed sleeve driven from the shaft 2 of an electric motor 1 through a spring 10. The nut 12 has teeth for engagement with a pinion 19 connected by a freewheel clutch to a pinion 18 slidable on a shaft 7 into engagement with the fly-wheel 6. The pinions 5 are normally held out of engagement with the fly-wheel by springs 14, 20. During normal starting, the pinion 5 is moved automatically into and out of engagement with the fly-wheel by the action of the nut 12 and spring 14. The nut 12 moves the pinions 19, 18 by engagement with a disc 27 on the pinion 19, and the pinions 18, 19 are driven in opposite directions by the fly-wheel 6 and the nut 12 respectively. If the fly-wheel turns backwards, the rotation of the pinion 18 is transmitted through the free-wheel clutch and tha pinion 19 to the nut 12, which is withdrawn along the screwed sleeve, so that the pinion 5 is no longer driven by the starting motor and is free to be returned by tha spring 14.
