Abstract

264,784. Eclipse Machine Co., (Assignees of Lansing, R. P.). Jan, 20, 1926, [Convention date]. Turning-gear.-In an engine starter comprising a central driving member 14 and an electric or other motor 36 operatively connected with an inertia means such as a fly-wheel 38 for driving the member 14, the motor, inertia means, and driving member are arranged to rotate about a common axis, and the member 14 is moved axially to engage an engine member 15 by means of a non-rotatable rod 23 passing axially through the gearing. As shown, the motor 36 drives the flywheel through a shell 41 engaged by a screw-thread 40 on the motor shaft and moving automatically into engagement with a plate 42 secured to the flywheel. Transmission gearing between the fly-wheel and the member 14 comprises a pinion 45 mounted on the flywheel 43 and engaging a bell-shaped gear 47 integral with a pinion 50 meshing with an internal gear 29. This has a toothed hub 28 engaging planet wheels 31 meshing with a fixed gear 24 and carried by a plate 26 and the end plate 4a of a barrel 4. A multiple-plate clutch 6 connects the barrel 4 to a nut 5 in engagement, with a screw-shaft 13, the pressure of springs 7 on the clutch plates being adjusted by means of a ring 9 screwing in the barrel 4. The shaft 13 is connected by splines 20 to the driving member 14 which is normally held by a spring 22 in contact with the head 21 of the central rod 23. When the fly-wheel 38 and member 14 have been set in rotation by the motor, the member 14 is moved into engagement with the engine member 15 by means of the rod 23, which is operated by means of a manually actuated rock-shaft provided with a slotted crank arm 56 pinned to the rod 23. When the engine starts, the member 14 is automatically disengaged by the movement of the screw-shaft 13 in the nut 5. For setting the flywheel in rotation by hand, a manually driven shaft 30 is connected by bevel gears 34, 35 to a hub 27 of the end plate 4a carrying the planet wheels 31, from which the rotation is transmitted to the fly-wheel through the gearing 28, 29, 50, 47, 45.
