Abstract

379,688. Turning-gear; electric ignition. ECLIPSE AVIATION CORPORATION, 545, North Arlington Avenue, East Orange, New Jersey, U.S.A. May 27, 1931, No. 15514. Convention date, May 27, 1930. [Classes 7 (iv) and 7 (v).] In a starting mechanism. having an inertia starter for cranking simultaneously the engine and a starting magneto, an auxiliary means is provided for driving the magneto when the engine is being started independently of the inertia starter. As shown, the starting magneto 70 is mounted on the member 9 of the casing 6, 7, with its axis at right-angles to that of the starter. The latter comprises a flywheel 15 which drives an engine-engaging member 48 through a gear train and a multiple-disc friction clutch 49. The gear train comprises a pinion 42 on the stub shaft 43 on which the hub of the flywheel is mounted ; the pinion 42 engages a gear 41 integral with a bell-shaped member 40 and with a pinion 39 engaging an internal gear 38 rotating on a stub shaft 25 on the end 26 of the barrel 27 of the clutch 49. Integral with the gear 38 is a sun wheel 36, and planet wheels 29 rotatable on the barrel end 26 engage the sun wheel 36 and a fixed internal gear 34 secured to the casing member 6. The clutch discs 49 are splined alternately to the barrel 27 and to a nut 50 engaging a threaded shaft 57 to which the clutch member 48 is splined. The friction clutch is adjustable by means of a nut 52 acting on springs 55 bearing on a flange 51 of a nut 50. The flywheel 15 is set in rotation by means of a shaft 16, actuated by a handle engaging a transverse pin 22, and carrying a bevel wheel 23 in engagement with a bevel wheel 24 on the hub 25 of the barrel end 26, so that the flywheel is driven through the planetary and spur gearing. When the flywheel has been set in rotation, the clutch member 48 is moved into engagement with the engine member 46 by means of an axial rod 61 having a shoulder 62 bearing against the end of the shaft 57 and carrying a nut 63 bearing against the member 48, a spring 59 being interposed between the shaft 57 and member 48. The outer end of the rod 61 is provided with a transverse pin 64 engaging a slot 65 in an arm 66 on a manually actuated rock shaft 67 by which the movement of the rod 61 is effected. At the same time, in order to drive the starting magneto from the inertia starter through bevel gearing 72, 73, 76, 78, the gear 78 is moved axially by means of a rod 83 sliding in the hollow shaft 16 and provided with a U-shaped head 84 having slots 85 engaged by the pin 64 on the rod 61. The rod 83 bears against a transverse pin 80 engaging the hub of the gear 78, which is normally held out of engagement with the gear 76 by a spring 81. When the engine starts, the clutch 48 is disengaged by its inclined faces, and a spring 69 on the shaft 67 returns the rods 61, 83 to normal position on release of the hand-lever on the shaft 67. To enable the magneto 70 to be driven independently of the starter, a bevel wheel in engagement with the bevel wheel 73 is driven through spur gearing and a ratchet clutch from a shaft rotated by means of a handle or by a cable coiled around a drum provided with a return spring.
