Abstract
345,008. Turning-gear. ECLIPSE AVIATION CORPORATION, 545, North Arlington Avenue, East Orange, New Jersey, U.S.A. Jan. 20, 1930, No. 1969. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1929. [Class 7 (v).] In inertia starters for aeroplane engines &c., the flywheel 66 is driven from a motor shaft 22 or a handoperated shaft 58 through toothed gearing which also connects the flywheel and the shafts 22, 8 with the starter clutch member 70 movable to engage with the engine. The shaft 22 carries a sleeve 25 driving a loose pinion 35 through a ratchet clutch 27, the pinion engaging a wheel 33 which gears with a pinion 63 secured to the flywheel. Engagement between the wheels 33, 35 is maintained by a roller 36. The hand-operated shaft 58 can be fitted into alternative positions in the casing 11 and carries a wheel 57 gearing with a wheel 56 splined to the member 70 and also secured to a wheel 50 gearing with a pinion 49 on a lay shaft 30 provided with inclined teeth 48 engaging similar teeth 47 on a plate 39 carrying a dished radially split coupling disc 40 frictionally engaging the rim 41 of the wheel 33 under the influence of a spring 42 adjustable by a screw 43 when a plug 46 is removed from the casing. The member 70 can be moved to starting position by a rod 73 linked to an arm on a shaft 75 which carries an arm 76 passing through a slot 84 in the casing to engage the member 70. A spring detent snaps the arm 76 to its extreme position. Alternative accommodation 85, 88 for the shaft and arm is provided. The flywheel 66 drives the member 70 through the reduction gearing 63, 33, 49, 50. When the flywheel is spun by hand, the wheels 33, 35 are so speeded up as to overrun the sleeve 25 and shaft 22, even if the motor is driving, so relieving the load on the hand. Shock due to back-firing &c. is prevented by slipping of the coupling 40 produced by the axial component of the pressure between the inclined teeth 47, 48. The motor is preferably switched off automatically as the member 70 is moved to starting position. To facilitate securing of the casing 11 to the engine casing 19, a flange 16 on the casing 11 is provided with keyhole slots 17 so that the securing-screws 18 can be in part inserted in the casing 19 before the casing 11 is fitted thereto.
