Abstract

377,810. Turning-gear. CIRRUSHERMES ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. and CAPLE, A. H., Gresham House, Old Broad Street, London. July 16, 1931, No. 20386. [Class 7 (v).] An inertia starter for internal-combustion engines comprises a housing 1, a manually driven shaft 3 for rotating a flywheel 13 through worm gearing 6, 7 and epicyclic gearing 9, 10, 11, and a jaw clutch member 18 driven from the flywheel through the epicyclic gearing and a cone clutch 14 within the worm wheel 7. The shaft 3 has a pin 4 for engagement by a starting handle and has keyed thereon the worm 6. The worm wheel 7 is secured to a clutch hub 8 on which is mounted the internally toothed wheel 9 of the epicyclic train. A pair of connected planet wheels 9a, 10a engage the wheel 9 and a fixed internal gear ring 10, and a sun pinion 11 engaging the planet wheel 10a is mounted on the spindle 12 of the flywheel. The cone clutch 14 is held in engagement with the clutch hub 8 by a spring 15 and the jaw clutch 18 is moved into engagement with an engine member by a manually operable rod 19.
