348,966. Turning-gear. ROYCE, F. H., Nightingale Road, Derby. Feb. 27, 1930, No. 23196. [Class 7 (v).] In an electric starter for internal-combustion engines, a helical pinion a<2> is carried by or geared to the armature shaft a<1> of the starting-motor a, and helical pinions b rotatable on shafts rigid with the motor casing mesh with the pinion a2 and with an annulus c having internal helical teeth and mounted on a lay shaft d carrying a pinion e for engagement with a toothed fly-wheel f. As shown, the pinion e is slidable on splines on the shaft d and is held by a spring e<2> against a stop ring e3. On rotation of the armature shaft a<1>, the annulus c and shaft d are moved axially by the reaction of the helical teeth, bringing the pinion e into mesh with the fly-wheel teeth, and the spring e<2> yields, if the teeth clash, until rotation of the pinion brings the teeth into register. The shaft d turns in a fixed bearing d<1> and a bearing d<2> formed in the end of the armature shaft a<1>. In a modification, the annulus c and pinion e are mounted on a sleeve splined to move axially on the lay shaft d.
