Abstract
Starter mechanism for engine. The mechanism relies on the torque of the starter motor to engage the pinion with the engine fly-wheel rather than solenoid. The motor shaft (2) is extended into a block housing an outer rotatable shell (19) driven from planetary gearing (6). The shafts (6a) of the planet wheels themselves lie in an inner rotatable shell (7) which is normally prevented from rotating by a lever (14) pivoted part way along its length. The lever is sprung (15) and engages in a slot (7e) in the end rim of the inner shell and is held in this position until the gear mechanism moves towards the flywheel (10), the remaining lever end being allowed to move forward also. Once the gearing moves foward the shell is allowed to rotate such that a secondary shaft (8) engaging with the flywheel is also driven.
