Abstract
A gear assembly, e.g. for actuating a valve, having provision for alternative manual operation comprises shed a motor (4) driving an eccentric carrier of a stepped planet wheel (16) and includes an epicyclic gear train (20, 16, 21) incorporating a ring gear (20) held normally stationary by a worm (36) meshing with teeth (37) on its periphery, the worm being held resiliently in a datum axial position on a splined shaft (24) on which it is axially slidable, and has means for sensing an axial displacement of the worm for initiating a resultant action, e.g. for stopping the motor. When the motor is stationary, manual operation of a handwheel on shaft (24) rotates ring gear (20) and thereby rotates ring gear (21). Axial displacement of worm (36) occurs during manual operation, inhibiting motor drive. Excess torque during motor drive can similarly displace worm (36) and stop the motor. <IMAGE>
