Abstract

PURPOSE: To eliminate harmful rotation-restraining force which would appear during overrunning operation with a simple mechanism and thereby to improve the overrunning performance of a starter by arranging a bearing for a pinion transmission gear on the extension portions of a clutch cover and a clutch outer piece.
CONSTITUTION: A pinion shaft 10 is rotatably and axially movably born on the inside peripheral portions of a clutch outer piece 4 and a clutch cover 8 through plain bearings 20 and 21. A clutch inner piece 6 is engaged with the shaft 10 through a helical spline 9, and is restrained from axial movement by the side wall of the outer piece 4 and the cover 8. Therefore, the inner piece 6 engages the outer piece 4 only through a roller 5, so that no harmful rotation-restraining force will appear during overrunning operation, and an engine drive pinion 11 cannot be disengaged from an engine-side ring gear before the starter is turned off.
