Abstract

144,509. Jeal, W. S. Aug. 1, 1919. Turning-gear.-In an electric starter in which a motor drives the engine shaft at low speed and is afterwards driven as a dynamo at engine speed, a one-direction clutch is interposed between a pinion c mounted on the armature shaft a and gearing carried by the engine shaft b and permanently in mesh with the pinion. In the form shown, the planet pinions d on a carrier f mesh with the pinion c and with an internally toothed ring h, which is carried by rotatable rings i, j, the ring j being connected by a free-wheel device o to the motor casing m. The planet carrier has a boss g keyed to the engine shaft b, and a freewheel device n is interposed between the boss g and the pinion c. The drive from the armature shaft a is transmitted at low speed through the gearing c, d and planet carrier f to the engine shaft, the ring h being held against rotation by the free-wheel connexion o. When the engine starts, its rotation is transmitted directly through the free-wheel clutch n and carrier f to the shaft b at engine speed, the ring h turning freely. In a modification, the free-wheel clutch n is replaced by a friction clutch, the planet carrier f being mounted on a screw-thread on the shaft b in order to put the friction clutch into engagement when the engine runs. The Provisional Specification describes a form of the invention in which bevel gearing is employed.
