192,417. Neumeyer Akt.-Ges., F., and Knapp, K. Jan. 28, 1922, [Convention date]. Turning-gear. - In an electric starter comprising a dynamo-electric machine geared to the engine. through epicycle gearing controlled by centrifugally acting members a mounted on pivots b parallel to the shaft c of the dynamo, the members a are arranged in front of their pivots in the direction of rotation. The members a have wedge-shaped friction ribs a<1> for engagement with similar grooves i<1> in a member i having internal teeth k in mesh with a pinion f on the dynamo shaft c. Perforations v in the member i enable any oil in the grooves it to be thrown out by centrifugal action, and the friction surfaces are also protected from lubricating oil by a casing o, r, s around the epicyclic gearing. Planet pinions g, on a carrier p, q geared to the engine by toothed or chain gearing, mesh with the pinion f and with an internallly-toothed member d carrying the pivots b. The member d also carries pawls n, which are held by light springs y in engagement with a fixed ratchet w on the casing, and have tails m. in contact with studs l on the centrifugal members a. At starting, the member d is held by the pawls n and the engine is driven at low speed from the dynamo shaft c through the planetary gearing. When the engine starts, the centrifugal members a move outwards against the light springs y, disengaging the pawls n and coming into engagement with the member i, so that the planetary gearing is locked and the dynamo is driven at engine speed.
