Abstract

278,499. Greaves, R. Sept. 11, 1926. Driving-arrangements.-A combined starter, dynamo and ignition unit for an internal-combustion engine comprises a dynamo-electric machine in which the field is rotated at starting in the reverse direction to that of the armature through a clutch and planetary or other gear, the field and gearing being stationary when the machine operates as a generator. Upon the crank shaft C is mounted a slidable splined clutch member D carrying a portion D' of a dog clutch adapted to engage another clutch member D<2> carried by a planet plate P surrounding a boss. E<1> of the fixed casing E. The member D is slidable on but not rotatable relatively to the splined armature shaft A and has a pin H which engages with an inclined slot K in the shaft C. A star wheel P<2> carried by the casing E gears with teeth P<1> on the planet plate and with a wheel P<3> on the field frame. The clutch elements D<1>, D<2> are normally kept out of engagement by a spring D<3>, but at starting, a limited movement of the armature causes the. member D to be moved against the action of the spring and the field is rotated through the planetary gear. As soon as the engine fires and overruns the motor, the pin H moves back along the slot K and the clutch is disengaged. Rotation of the field is prevented by an arm F<5> engaging with a ratchet F<4>. The arm P<5> is pivoted at F<6>, and has another arm F<7> which at starting is raised by a cone F<8> carried by the clutch member D so that the field is free to rotate in the reverse direction in the event of a backfire. Starting may be effected by cranking from the end A<3> in which case the machine acts as a generator and supplies the ignition coil. The ignition coil and distributor unit Bare operated by a worm pinion W keyed to the crankshaft. A magneto may be employed. The main commutator brushes carried by the field frame are connected to slip rings R, R<1>. If a combined permanent magnet and electromagnet field be employed, the exciting brush may be arranged to be raised automatically on reversal of field rotation due to a backfire at starting.
