Abstract

Turning-gear.-In an arrangement for preventing backward rotation of the engine shaft from being transmitted to the starting-handle, the handle 4 is secured to a sleeve 2 rotatable on a starting-shaft 1 having the usual dog clutch. Planetary gearing between the sleeve 2 and the shaft 1 is locked to rotate solidly at starting, and rotates freely, in the event of backward starting, without affecting the sleeve 2 and the starting-handle. In the form shown, backward movement of the sleeve 2 is prevented by a ring 5 mounted on the sleeve and carrying pawls 6 engaging ratchet teeth in the end disc 7 of the casing 8, which is either fixed or is allowed a limited movement against springs 9. The planetary gearing comprises sun wheels 10, 18 on the sleeve 2 and shaft 1, and planet-wheels 11, 16 on pins 12 freely rotatable in a cage 13, which has ratchet teeth engaged by pawls 14 carried by a ring 15 on the sleeve 2 in order to lock the planetary gear at starting. The wheels 16 may be keyed on the pins 12 or mounted on screwthreads in order to bind against the face of the cage 13 at starting. The sleeve 2 may be locked to the shaft 1 by inserting a pin in the perforation 3.
