Abstract
135,822. Munters, A. J. E., and Munters, C. G. Nov. 29, 1918, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Turning - gear. - A starting-handle 1 is disconnected in the event of backward starting by means comprising a one-way ball or roller clutch 9 between a fixed member 8 and a sleeve 7 normally rotating with the starting-handle. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the boss of the starting-handle has a notch engaging a pin 3 on the engine shaft 4 and two projections 5 engaging inclined notches in the member 7. If the engine. starts backwards, the member 7 is stopped and the notches move the handle out of engagement with the pin 3. When starting, the member 7 may be held against rotation by a spring ball a until the projections 5 are properly in engagement with the corresponding notches. In a modified arrangement, the handle 1 is fixed to a shaft passing loosely through the members 7, 8 and engaging the engine shaft by means of a dog clutch; the projections 5 are replaced by a number of projections nn the face of a disk. In another form, a shaft such as 4 passing through the members 7, 8 is attached to the end of the engine shaft by a cotter pin and set-screw. In a further form, the inner member 7 is fixed and the member 8 is rotatable. In the form shown in Fig. 9, the hub of the handle 1 is connected to the engine shaft 4 by a spring-pressed dog 24, which is withdrawn by the inclined face of a notch in the edge of the member 7 when the engine starts backwards. The dog is then retained by a spring catch 38.
