Abstract

158,855. Munters, A. J. E., and Setterberg, C. Feb. 10, 1920, [Convention date]. Turning - gear. - A starting-needle 1 is connected to the engine shaft 8 by a clutch 5 disconnected by an abnormal resistance, and to a stationary member 3 by a ball or roller clutch 4 which arrests the handle if the engine starts backwards; the clutch 5 comprises buffers or balls in one clutch member 7 held bv springs 6 in engagement with recesses in the other clutch member 2. In one form, Fig. 1, the clutch member 7 is fixed on the engine shaft 8 and the member 2 is rotated by means of the handle 1, which has notches engaging pins 9 on the member 2. In a modification, Fig. 3, the clutch members 5 are in the boss of the starting- handle and engage recesses in a member 7 fixed on a shaft 8 having at the other end a clutch 11 for engaging the engine shaft. In another form, the clutch member 7 is pinned to the shaft 8 adjacent to a clutch member such as 11, which is loose on the shaft 8 and has recesses engaged by the members 5. In each form, several resilient clutches may be provided, and also pins which break if the engine starts backwards.
