349,291. Turning-gear. MacMILLAN, C. H., 101, Strathcona Drive, Anniesland, Glasgow. May 19, 1930, No. 15273. [Class 7 (v). ] An engine starter comprises a motor-driven shaft 1 formed with a quick thread 2 engaged by a nut 4, a starter pinion 5 sleeved on the nut and having a frictional clutch connection with the nut, and a spring 8 tending to maintain the friction clutch in engagement and to resist endwise movement of the pinion on the nut. As shown, the friction clutch is formed by conical surfaces 6, 7 on the nut and the pinion, and the spring 8 is interposed between the pinion and a collar 9 on the nut. On rotation of the shaft 1, the axial movement of the nut moves the pinion into engagement with the toothed ring 11 on the engine flywheel. At the end of this axial movement, the clutch is temporarily relieved by the abutment of the pinion against a collar or shoulder 10 on the shaft 1, until frictional engagement is re-established under the influence of the spring 8.
