399,588. Turning-gear. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. May 2, 1932, No. 12553. Convention date, May 2, 1931. Addition to 388,489. [Class 7 (v).] In an electric starter in which the pinion 37 is threaded on a sleeve 16 sliding on splines 13 on the shaft 10 of the starting motor, and axial movement of the sleeve is resisted initially by a weak spring 21 and afterwards by a stronger spring 20, a sufficient axial movement of the pinion relative to the sleeve disengages the threaded connection between them and allows their relative rotation. As shown, the spring 20 bears against a thrust washer 22 and a thimble 26 arranged between the springs limits the compression of the weaker spring 21. At the inner end of the shaft 10, the sleeve 16 abuts against a thimble 29 bearing against a stop collar 32. The threaded sleeve 16 and the bore of the pinion have smooth non-threaded portions 42, 41, so that they are only slightly interengaged in the idle position shown, and are completely disengaged by a predetermined backward movement of the pinion against the pressure of the spring 21, for example on the sudden starting of the engine. A thrust washer 33 and a light spring 34 prevent drift of the pinion into engagement with the engine member 38.
