388,188. Turning-gear. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. Jan. 27, 1932, No. 2467. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1931. [Class 7 (v).] In an engine starter in which a pinion 11 moves axially on a screw-threaded sleeve 13 into and out of engagement with an engine gear 12, the return of the pinion into engagement, after the engine has been started, is prevented by a plunger 26 sliding radially in the pinion and brought into engagement with a recess or a groove in the sleeve 13 by centrifugally acting elements 29 pivoted at 31 upon the pinion. In one form, Figs. 1 and 3, the sleeve 13 is driven through a spring 14 from the shaft 10 of the starting motor and the pinion 11 is normally held in the idle position by a light spring 19. When the engine is at rest, the plunger 26 is held out of engagement with the recess 24 in the sleeve 13 by a spring 27, so that the pinion is free to move into mesh with the engine gear 12 when the shaft 10 is driven by the starting motor. When the engine has been started, the pinion moves out of mesh and the plunger 26 is engaged with the recess 24 by the centrifugal action of the pivoted elements 29. In a modification, Fig. 7, the plunger 126 has a head 128 adapted to engage a groove 124 in the sleeve 13 and the spring 127 is interposed between the head 128 and a cap 130.
