Abstract

407,984. Turning - gear. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. June 29, 1932, No. 18353. Convention date, June 30, 1931. [Class 7 (v).] In an engine drive comprising a pinion 28 movable into and out of engagement with an engine gear 18, a unit splined on the power shaft 11 of the starter and in threaded engagement with the pinion, and a hand-actuated sleeve 51 resiliently engaged with the unit to move the unit and the pinion longitudinally, the elements 21, 19, 64, 32 of the unit are held in assembled relation by means of pins and of flanges formed on certain of the elements. The element 21 is a sleeve internally threaded to engage threads 31 on the hub 27 of the pinion 28, which has a smooth bore and slides on the smooth part 13 of the shaft 11. The sleeve 21 is retained on a collar 19, sliding on longitudinal splines 12 on the shaft 11, by one or more radial pins 22 inserted from inside before fitting the collar 19 on the shaft. The sleeve 21 is retained on the threads 31 by a thimble 32 encircling the end of the sleeve 21 and having lugs 33 for engagement with the ends 34 of the threads 31. Radial pins 39 retain the thimble 32 on the member 21. The pinion 28 is normally retained in the position shown by detent members 42 seated in radial openings in the sleeve 21 and held by springs 49 in engagement with the inclined faces 47 of longitudinal recesses 46, Figs. 5 and 6, in the hub of the pinion. Axial movement of the pinion into mesh with the engine member 18 is effected by a fork 54 engaging the sleeve 51 and actuated manually through a link 61 ; a lug 57 on the fork 54 engages a switch plunger 58 on the motor 10 when the pinion is fully in mesh. A spring 63 is interposed between a flange on the sleeve 51 and the edge of the thimble 32. When the engine starts, the pinion is threaded back within the member 21, until stopped by a shoulder 69 formed by the end of the splined part 12 of the shaft, the detents 42 riding up the inclined faces 47 of the recesses 46. On the release of the fork 54, the sleeve 21 is withdrawn by the action of the fork 54 on a second sleeve 64 having a flange 66 clamped between the end of the member 21 and a flange 67 on the collar 19, and the detents 42 ride over inclined faces 48 on the hub of the pinion. If the teeth of the pinion clash with those of the member 18 in the engaging movement, the spring 63 allows the fork 54 to complete its movement and to switch on the motor, rotating the shaft 11 and the pinion and enabling meshing to be effected by the spring 63.
