Abstract

388,253. Turning - gear. ECLIPSE MACHINE CO., Elmira, New York, U.S.A. April 28, 1932, No. 12236. Convention date, April 29, 1931. [Class 7 (v).] In an engine starter in which a pinion 12 is moved axially and driven by means of interthreaded springs 15, 16 anchored at their ends in the pinion and in an actuating member 17, the anchorage is obtained by providing the ends of the springs with radially out-turned portions which engage substantially axial slots 20 in the pinion and the member 17, and are cut to form radially extending shoulders 25. As shown, the springs are retained by collars 21, 28 which are forced on annular seats formed by turning down a part of the pinion and the member 17 to the outside diameter of the springs. The collars 21, 28 engage the shoulders 25 on the springs. The member 17 is mounted on the shaft 10 of a starting motor, and a light spring 29 normally holds the pinion 12 out of mesh with the engine gear 11.
