Abstract
538,754. Coupling pinions to shafts. BRIGGS & STRATTON CORPORATION. Dec. 5, 1939, No. 31537. Convention date, March 31, 1939. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXVII] In an engine starter in which a starter pinion 6 movable along the starter shaft 7 is engaged internally by a threaded sleeve 9 driven from the shaft 7 through a rubber or like annulus 13 held in compression between a flange 14 on the sleeve 9 and a flange 15 secured upon the shaft 7,. the annulus and the threaded member 9, 12 are enclosed by a housing member 18 which excludes dirt &c. and has a flange 25 engageable with a part 24 of the pinion to limit the axial movement of the pinion into mesh with the engine member 5. As shown, the part 24 is a collar secured on the threaded hub 12 of the pinion. The flanges 14, 15 are retained within the housing 18 by a shoulder 23 and by the engagement of lugs 19 on the flange 15 with slots 20 in the housing, a spring retaining-ring 21 being provided. A light spring 28 prevents accidental meshing of the pinion with the member 5.
