Abstract
222,065. Lanquetin, L. Aug. 25, 1923. Turning-gear.-In an electric starter comprising a motor which is driven as a generator when the engine is running normally, and in which the armature shaft 1 is connected to the engine shaft by planetary gearing comprising planet pinions 3 on a carrier 4 secured to the engine shaft and an internally-toothed ring 5 movable axially into engagement with either the carrier 4 or the motor casing, the armature shaft may be coupled by clutch teeth 11, 12 to the carrier 4 for starting by means of a handle 31, the coupling being effected by axial movement of the armature shaft. together with its armature 28, when the handle 31 is pushed inwards. As shown, the armature is unsymmetrical with respect to its field, so that the magnetic attraction will co-operate with a spring 23 in maintaining the shaft normally in the position in which the clutch 11, 12 is disengaged. The spring 23 is within the hub of the carrier 4 and acts upon a slidable member 24 engaging a recess in the end of the armature shaft.
