Abstract
224,513. Bosch Akt.-Ges., R. Nov. 9, 1923, [Convention date]. Turning-gear.-In an electric starting-motor, the pinion 12 of which is moved axially into engagement with the engine fly-wheel 20 by the action of the field magnets 5 and is held in engagement until the motor is accelerated by the starting of the engine, a one-way clutch between the pinion 12 and the armature allows the engine to overrun the starting-motor independently of any axial movement of the pinion. As shown, the pinion 12 has a hollow shaft 11 inserted in the bore 10 of the armature shaft 7, and the one-way clutch comprises a coiled spring 14 engaging at one end 16 a hole 17 in the shaft 7, the other end being in frictional engagement with the bore of the pinion shaft 11. The spring 14 serves also to cushion the pinion if its teeth clash with those of the fly-wheel when moved axially, the axial movement of the pinion being limited by a screw 19 secured to the shaft 7, and by a stop within the bore 10 of the shaft 7. A spring 8 normally retains the armature 6 and pinion 12 in the disengaged position shown.
