Abstract

Nov. 21, 1919 Turning-gear.-In a starting-device in which the starter pinion c is internally threaded to engage a screw shaft 2 driven by an electric motor. the automatic movement of the pinion along the shaft into mesh with teeth on the engine fly-wheel is ensured by a plunger f pressed into engagement with the pinion by a spring. The plunger may engage a longitudinal groove e in a reduced extension of the pinion. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the shaft 2 is a sleeve surrounding the armature shaft of the motor, from which it is driven through friction clutches 8, 9 and 3, 7. When the pinion has moved into mesh with the fly-wheel, it bears against a shoulder 4 on the sleeve 2 and rotates with the sleeve, the friction clutches allowing the engine to be started without shock and preventing damage if the engine starts backwards. In a modification, the pinion is mounted directly on a threaded armature shaft and at the end of its travel it abuts against one member of a friction clutch, the other member being on the shaft. Annular grooves e<1>, Fig. 5, may be formed in an extension of the pinion to prevent it from being moved into gear by vibration.
