Abstract

173,629. Midgley, A. H., and Vandervell & Co., Ltd., C. A. Oct. 14, 1920. Turning-gear.-In an electric starter, a starter pinion a, loosely mounted on the armature shaft c, is moved into gear with an engine member b by the axial movement of a screw member e and is rotated for starting through a clutch comprising friction surfaces f<1>, f<2> on the pinion and the screw member. In the form shown, the pinion and the screw member are initially kept apart by a spring g, the distance between them being limited by a flanged ring h secured to the friction member f<1> of the pinion. The pinion is normally disengaged from the engine member b by springs l, m, and a second friction clutch, formed by a flange k<1> on the pinion and a member k<2> fixed on the armature shaft, comes into operation when the pinion is fully in mesh with the engine member.
