Abstract
417,128. Turning-gear. CIRRUS-HERMES ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and CAPLE, A. H., 274, Gresham House, Old Broad Street, London. March 28, 1933, No. 9285. [Class 7 (v).] An inertia starter is of the type comprising a high-speed flywheel 2 located within the housing of a double epicyclic gear train through which the flywheel drives a starter claw 5 movable at will into engagement with a counterpart claw 6 on the engine crankshaft. The gear train includes a relatively fixed internally toothed ring 9 meshing with the planet pinion 8 and mounted by means of a slip clutch element between the separable sections 1, 1<a> of the housing to enable the toothed ring and the slip clutch element to be exposed for inspection. As shown, a ring 19 of friction material, such as bonded asbestos, is interposed between the toothed ring 9 and a metal ring 21 held against rotation by a dowel pin 23 and exposed to the pressure of springs 20 in pockets 22. The planet pinion 8 is driven by a sun pinion 7 on the spindle 3 of the flywheel and is integral with a planet pinion 10 driving an internal gear 11, to the hub of which the starter claw 5 is splined at 29. The flywheel is driven by an electric motor, the armature 27 of which is mounted on the flywheel spindle 3, and the starter claw 5 is moved into engagement with the claw 6 by an axial rod 30, springs 32, 36 being interposed between the claw member 5 and abutments 33, 37 on the rod. A metal disc 34 on the rod co-operates with contacts 35 in the circuit of the motor 25 to switch on the motor on movement of the rod 30 to the right in the Figure and to switch off the motor when the clutch 5, 6 is engaged.
