Abstract

379,778. Turning-gear. ECLIPSE AVIATION CORPORATION, 545, North Arlington Avenue, East Orange, New Jersey, U.S.A. June 12, 1931, No. 17093. Convention date, June 16, 1930. [Class 7 (v).] An engine starter comprises a flywheel 14 which is housed in a casing 11 rigidly secured to a rotatable member of the engine, such as the flywheel 3, and is normally connected to rotate with the engine member but is disconnected while being cranked. The starter may be used for outboard engines for propelling small boats. As shown, the starter flywheel 3 is coupled to the engine flywheel through a friction clutch member 39 normally held in engagement by a spring 42 abutting against the endplate 8 of the casing 11. The hub 35 of the clutch member 39 is threaded to engage the threaded boss 12 of the plate 8. In order to disengage the clutch member 39 when the flywheel 14 is to be set in rotation, a rod 45 carries a transverse pin 47 passing through slots in the boss 12 and held by a nut 49 in engagement with slots in the hub 35. The upper end of the rod 45 is provided with a disc 46 for engagement by a hand crank 32 used for setting the flywheel 14 in rotation. The hand crank drives the flywheel through planetary gear comprising a sun pinion 18 secured to the flywheel, an internal ring gear 22 mounted in the casing 11, and planet wheels 21 rotatable on a carrier plate 25, the hub 28 of which is fitted with a pin 31 for engagement by the slotted hand crank 32. When the flywheel 14 has been set in rotation and the hand crank 32 is removed, the clutch 39 is re-engaged by the spring 42, enabling the flywheel 14 to transmit its energy to the engine shaft 4, and the clutch 39 then remains in engagement. In a modification, Fig. 3, the spring 42 is omitted, the cranking pin 31 is replaced by a pair of lugs 31a, and the rod 45 extends above the hub 28 and is provided with an enlargement 46a to enable the clutch 39 to be manually engaged and disengaged.
