349,835. Engine starters. ECLIPSE AVIATION CORPORATION, 545, North Arlington Avenue, East Orange, New Jersey, U.S.A. July 28, 1930, No. 22662. Convention date, Aug. 8, 1929. [Classes 7 (iv) and 7(v).] Turning - gear; dynamos, arrangement of.- A hand - driven engine starter comprises a cranking shaft 9 mounted in a housing 6 and conn e c t e d by reduction gearing to clutch member 18 for engagement with an engine member 19, means being provided for preventing backward rotation of the shaft 9, and a starting magneto 70 being mounted on the housing 6 and driven from the shaft 9 through reduction gearing. As shown in Fig. 1, the shaft 9 carries a sun gear 16, and planetary gears 20 rotatable on a driving barrel 24 mesh with the gear 16 and with an internally toothed ring 21 mounted on the housing 6. The barrel 24 is connected by a multiple-plate clutch 31 to a nut 30 engaging a threaded shaft 42 on which the jaw clutch 18 is splined, the parts being assembled by means of a central rod 45 and nuts 46, 47, a spring 48 being interposed between the shaft 42 and clutch 18. Springs 38 acting on the plate clutch 31 are adjusted by means of a nut 39. In order that the threaded shaft 42 may move the clutch 18, 19 into engagement on rotation of the nut 30, external grooves 49 on the clutch member 18 are engaged by lugs 50 on a two-part ring 51, which is held by an encircling coil spring 52 in frictional engagement with a lip 53 on an oil-sealing member 45 secured to the housing. In the event of backward rotation of the engine at starting, the clutch 31 slips, backward rotation of the cranking shaft 9 being prevented by a ratchet member 66 splined to a hub 63 on the shaft 9 and held by a spring 68 in engagement with a ratchet 67 on the housing. To enable the starter to be cranked from one side a cranking shaft mounted at right-angles to the shaft 9 is provided with a bevel gear 59 meshing with a bevel gear 12 on the shaft 9. The magneto 70 is detachably mounted on a plate 71 integral with the housing 6, and is secured by a strap 72 bolted at its ends to the plate-71. The shaft 75 of the magneto carries a clutch member 76 engaging a clutch member 81 on a shaft 82 having teeth 85 in mesh with a gear 14 mounted on the cranking shaft 9. In a modification, Fig. 5, an oil-sealing member is provided with a flange 86 forming an annular friction surface, and a ring 87 is mounted in spaced relation thereto by a spacing ring 88 and screws 89. The ring 88 is frictionally engaged between the members 86, 87 and provided with a lug 90 in engagement with a notch 91 in the periphery of the clutch member 18.
