Abstract
416,506. Turning-gear. DELL, C., 25, Swing Gate Lane, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, and READ, H. L., Netherton, Herington Grove, Hutton Mount, Essex. March 17, 1933, No. 8130. [Class 7 (v).] An engine starter comprises a starting motor 1 disposed in a casing 2 coaxially with the engine crankshaft 4 and coupled thereto through frictional epicyclic gearing, the armature shaft 3 of the motor being hollowed to accommodate a starting-handle shaft 11 adapted to be temporarily connected to the crankshaft 4, for instance by a dog-clutch connection 12 normally disengaged by a spring (not shown). The shaft 11 is provided with a disc or flywheel 6 forming a sun wheel in engagement with planetary rollers 9 supported by a carrier 8 rigidly connected with the crankshaft 4, the annulus 7 of the gear train being fixed on the casing 2. The frictional driving pressure may be adjusted by axial adjustment of the sun wheel 6 and planets 9 by means of externally threaded rings 10 mounted on the shafts 3, 4 and screwed into the ends of the casings 2, 5.
