Abstract

429,067. Variable-speed gearing. PENNEY, R. L., 16, Ocean Parkway, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A. May 30, 1934, No. 16126. Convention date, June 3, 1933. [Class 80 (ii)] Epicyclic variable-speed gearing for a motor vehicle comprises planet gears 20 on a carrier 19 which is adapted to be connected to the driven shaft 16 either direct, as shown, or through a reversing train 70-74, 62, or through a reduction train (not shown), the planets 20 meshing with a sun-wheel 21 on the driving shaft 10 and with an annulus 23 secured to an axiallypositioned sleeve 27 provided with a flange 35 disposed between a flywheel 12, splined on the shaft 10, and a disc 39. The hub 41 of the latter has cam recesses containing wedging rollers 46 which co-operate with a ring 43 splined in the casing 30 so that the disc 39 is capable of rotating only in the direction of rotation of shaft 10. Springs 13 and 40 are interposed between the flange 35 and the flywheel and between the flange and the disc 39 respectively. Spring- restrained weights 50 are adjustably carried by levers 51 pivotally carried by the flywheel, the arms 53 of the levers acting on the disc 39. With the engine idling, the flange 35 rotates idly in the reverse direction. As the shaft 10 is progressively accelerated, the disc 39 is moved into engagement with the flange 35, whereby the latter is finally arrested. Power is then transmitted to the shaft 16 at a progressively-decreasing gear ratio. On further acceleration beyond a predetermined speed, the flywheel is moved towards the flange 35, and the latter and the disc 39 are progressively carried along with the flywheel, until eventually a solid drive results. The gear can be rendered inoperative by moving a ring 56 into the position shown, so as to prevent movement of the levers 51.
